ABSTRACT

Strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT) analysis is a useful tool for gaining new perspectives in mentor–mentee discussions. Firstly, it was most likely that the analyses could be centred on the person’s own details being the dominant factor. Secondly, however, the analyses could reveal a dysfunctional work environment in the mentee’s department. This latter problem, in assisting the mentee work towards a solution. The primary aspect, and most common though, was that the person’s own details were the dominant factor and each time led to an overhaul of their career strategy.
