ABSTRACT

After the PhD one may well consider taking the career in science further by looking for a postdoctoral research post. There are two types of this. The first is where one would apply to be a research assistant in response to an advertisement of some kind by a principal investigator. The second is where one applies to an agency for funding of his or her own research proposal; with this option, one would, in parallel, be arranging for a research institution to base the fellowship at if it were funded. The first type is the predominant one by number. Each of the four Faculties of University of Manchester offers an extensive researcher development programme, providing a blend of cross-disciplinary and generic skills training opportunities to equip with the skills, attributes and knowledge to thrive as independent researchers and professionals. Training covers areas such as research management, personal effectiveness, career management, engagement, influence and impact.
