ABSTRACT

The New Academics Programme naturally offers a wide range of training in options for teaching. A key feature of this is the teaching observation form, which requires an assessment of the following aspects of one’s' lecture: planning and preparation; management, communication and interaction with audience; resources (which hardware medium) used; and finally, various comments given by the observer, an experienced academic. The National Student Survey in the United Kingdom, introduced in the 2000s, is clearly interested in student satisfaction, and indeed, it is the student who fills in his or her form. As an enthusiastic presenter of lecture demonstrations, the author received applause during a lecture after a laser light demonstration of diffraction from a two dimensional grating, which he had then spun around with a motor at an increasing speed until it gave a powder diffraction pattern.
