The author relevant experience to mentoring, as distinct from other roles such as senior manager, line manager and supervisor, is that he had served as senior mentor for new academics in the School of Chemistry at the University of Manchester and a mentor on the University of Manchester Gold staff mentoring scheme for 10 years. A second major category of one’s mentoring is being on hand to offer advice to one’s own past PhDs and postdoctoral scientists in their careers in science. The different stages of career are often referred to as early career, mid-career and late career respectively.
