ABSTRACT

This is a major commission that may happen to you if your colleagues decide to put your name forward and you succeed in the election. This will only have happened if you are well known to your colleagues and you will know well the workings of your learned society. You will have a committee of eager, well-qualified, elected colleagues on the society’s executive committee. There will be a suite of regular tasks ahead of the committee such as the next few conferences of the society, which is likely to be delegated to a subcommittee or to the local organisers selected in some way. So as leader, its president, what do you focus on? You will of course respond to queries that will come to you from your colleagues. You may be concerned over this or that activity of your society and you will ask pertinent questions of the elected officers. Overall though, what do you personally do?
