ABSTRACT

Restoration serves as another term that people use during the recovery period. Restoration, or returning to the way things were before, may be appropriate in some cases such as with the historical and cultural elements of a community. The meaningful parts of an historic structure, for example, can be rebuilt with elements saved during debris removal. We can also integrate mitigation features to restored buildings. By elevating a structure above anticipated flood levels, an historic building can be kept in its historic context but made safe from future risks. By doing so, we safeguard our ancestry and the places that mean so much to each of us.
