ABSTRACT

The field of emergency management has grown dramatically, particularly over the past 50 years. A wide range of events, including floods, hurricanes, tornados, tsunamis, earthquakes, volcanoes, massive explosions, large hazardous waste sites, and terrorist attacks, highlights the importance of understanding how people and organizations behave when confronted by disasters. To deal with existing and new types of threats that we will prepare for, respond to, recover from, and mitigate against, we need professional, well-educated emergency managers. Education, coupled with relevant experience, can play a role in creating a more effective approach to disasters.
