ABSTRACT

This chapter relates to those parts of the works that are done by firms other than the principal contractor. Without the written consent of the other party, neither the employer nor contractor should assign the contract. It is usual and good practice, upon the issue of each interim certificate, to state the amount that has been included for each named or nominated subcontractor. The first of these groups allows a principal contractor to appoint domestic or trade subcontractors. The second group is those firms who are the employer's own directly employed contractors or workers and their right to be engaged upon the works during the normal contract period. The third group include named or nominated subcontractors who, once appointed, will work in very much the same way as the principal contractor's own subcontractors. The principal contractor may wish to carry out work for which a prime cost sum has been included in the contract documents.
