ABSTRACT

Reactive approaches to the reduction of designed-in error potential include the more active and systematic use of the information available on improving ergonomics/human factors through retrofit. A benefit in this area is a greater and more systematic consideration of both human error and the factors which predispose human error potential during accident/incident investigation. In one of the ergonomics evaluations, the investigators identified so much wrong with the machine from an ergonomics perspective that they decided it would be easier to re-design the operator than re-design the machine. The failure of mining equipment companies to utilise ergonomics research, guidance and recommendations within their design process creates the potential for human error and, thereby, the increased likelihood of accidents/incidents The intensity, duration and location of aural alarms and signals shall be selected so as to be compatible with the acoustical environment of the intended receiver, as well as the requirements of other personnel in the signal area.
