ABSTRACT

Effective communication and teamwork are essential for safe operations across all high-risk industries. An obvious place to begin the development of core enabling knowledge relating to communication and teamwork is through exploring the basic models of communication. Skills in the effective packaging and transmission of information and techniques involved in closed loop coordination form perhaps the most basic principles of communication in high-risk industries. A critical communication skill that can be developed in non-technical skills training programs is that of enquiry and assertiveness. The authentic environment of the simulator, where teams can work together on anything from an everyday procedure through to an emergency situation, lends itself entirely to the development of communication and teamwork skills. The traditional critical incident debrief can be used for on-the-job training of communication and teamwork skills. Video is an extremely powerful learning tool in the debriefing of training relating to communication and teamwork.
