ABSTRACT

This chapter revisits the topic of the complexity to understand a little of the 'why'. Simple interactions for complex tasks Whereas the digital function of the live- Network Enabled Capability system is an example of complex interaction, the voice comms function using the radio is comparatively simple. The core concepts of emergence, open systems behaviour, sensitive dependence on initial conditions and dynamical system behaviour are dealt with from a human-factors point of view. Emergent behaviours do not just rely on the boundless possibilities implied by complexity and open systems behaviour; they also rely on constraints. Phase spaces arise from the study of complex dynamical systems and the inadequacies of simple one-dimensional time-series analysis in capturing and representing their behaviour. Phase spaces and Functional Holography seem to provide a powerful retrospective legacy for the NATO SAS-050 approach space.
