ABSTRACT

This chapter conveys all aspects of quality in healthcare, but the emphasis is on safety. It provides a guide for doing the right thing in healthcare. One can identify three approaches to healthcare: the treatment of illness, the prevention of illness and the promotion of health. The chapter focuses on safety and ethics in healthcare. In this chapter, Jessica Santillan's story raises questions not only about safety and ethics, but also about how countries should provide the best return on their investment into the health of their people across all the dimensions and layers of healthcare. The chapter examines that two conceptual frameworks are An Integrated Framework for Quality and Risk Management, and An Information Model for a Patient Safety Classification, which underpin our recommendations for safer, better healthcare. The chapter also presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of the book.
