ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to provide guidance on developing training designed to improve the non-technical skills of individuals working in risky environments. It presents a general framework for training development and describes methods of evaluating the effectiveness of the training. Although not specific to the training of non-technical skills, there are a number of useful basic texts on designing, running, and evaluating training courses that are worth reading prior to developing a training course. In the context of non-technical skills, a training needs assessment is the identification of skills that need to be trained. The most widely used strategy to train non-technical skills used in high-risk industries is crew resource management training. Other types of training techniques that can be used to improve the non-technical skills of team members are: cross-training, team self-correction training, event-based training, and team facilitation training. The recommended approach to training evaluation is one that is multifaceted and considers several separate methods of assessment.
