ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book begins with the ideology of neoliberalism and the concepts that have had an influence over housing policy. It describes the state of housing policy with examples from the six countries included. The book also describes many examples of where government intervention in or abrogation of the market would better achieve social objectives. It attempts to chart a way forward to devise a housing policy that overcomes the drawbacks identified. Neoliberalism was conceptualised as an ideological discourse. Some commentators on neoliberalism have emphasised the importance of contractual relations as defining the approach and being more important than even the concern with markets. The key point is that neoliberalism in housing has been accompanied by the imposition of neoliberal values and policies in other spheres that have impacted on housing.
