ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the affordances of neighbourhoods and to assess the policy problems and policies designed to influence their nature. It begins with a definition of neighbourhood and an overview of the main attributes or affordances that impact on the life of residents. The chapter examines the physical and social space around a dwelling that has a use and a meaning for the residents. It describes the importance of neighbourhood to residents. The chapter explores the changing dynamic of neighbourhoods. It shows that the importance of the context in determining the impact on the well-being of dwellers. The focus on the neighbourhood, or the locality in which a house is situated, is justified by its importance in the use and value of the home. Housing policy has focused on neighbourhoods. Political interest in neighbourhood problems has tended to focus on the existence of segregation where people of a similar ethnic origin, economic class, or lifestyle category live together.
