ABSTRACT

EN1990 is the basis for all other Eurocode for structural design (EN1991-EN1999). Its Annex A1 recommends partial safety factors to be used for typical loads in buildings. However, it does not include process loads such as pressure, temperature and dust loads present in equipment such as electrostatic precipitators and fabric filters. If these loads are treated as variable loads as done for buildings, it results in a heavier structure than current industrial designs. As the maximum value of process loads are controlled by various systems in the plant, it does not seem appropriate to treat them as live or environmental load. Therefore this study recommends partial safety factors for process loads so that they are consistent with Eurocode philosophy and produce a safe and economic design.
