ABSTRACT

Runway beams are subjected to biaxial bending and torsional moments due to concentrated vertical and eccentric horizontal loads. The cross section, the slenderness and the horizontal-to-vertical load ratio affect the member stability behaviour and the failure criteria of these beams. The paper presents a numerical parametric study on the member stability behaviour of simple supported runway beams. The results of the study are used to review the existing simplified design method using reduction factors according to EN 1993-6, Annex A. The method does not lead to suitable design results for beams subject to large torsional moments. Limiting the application range of the model to small warping moments, however, provide suitable design results.
