ABSTRACT

This chapter describes why the infrastructure needs to be delivered hand-in-hand with development, to ensure that the eventual development is sustainable, and also highlights that how poverty and inadequate infrastructure are inexorably linked. The chapter gives an overview of all types of infrastructure that is required to support real estate development in South America. It highlights the need for innovation and new technologies that move away from traditional carbon-intensive solutions and looks at the level of infrastructure delivery across the Big Five in South America. The chapter looks at funding mechanisms such as government funding, private sector investment, public private partnerships arrangements and multilateral development banks loans. It concludes with an appraisal of different approaches to infrastructure development.
