ABSTRACT

Using whole life value analysis allows us to develop the most cost efficient buildings and facilities taking into account the aspect of a building’s realistic life span which, in many cases, is longer than that of its occupants. There is no right answer when it comes to prioritisation and deciding the hierarchy of factors to include in value calculations. Project values will help keep the project on track through the changeable process of design and construction and there needs to be at least five of them but more is preferable as they provide an insight into the real drivers for the project. Project values need to be ranked in order of importance and associated weightings need to be allocated. Decision making requires clear thinking on objectives and service requirements whenever it is undertaken and so whole value assessments and hierarchical structures for important project values need to be visited frequently.
