ABSTRACT

In order for the use of people’s works to be legal, it is generally required by law to first get their permission. This permission could be for a fee or for free, depending on various factors, such as type of work, purpose of use, and even country. Intellectual property laws provide information to help determine in what situations permissions are required and from whom to seek them. Because interactive Web projects involve the use of multiple media types, some of which can be other people’s works, and some of which are created in a project, each of which is protected in different ways by law and for varying durations, it is important for a Web designer to be aware of the different types of laws that govern the use of other people’s works as well as the protection of those produced in a project.
