ABSTRACT

Color is an essential element of Web design, in that it is capable of communicating the emotions of users. As a result, it is one of the design tools available to Web authors for creating the intended first impression for a website. This chapter introduces the Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) properties used to specify color and also discusses design guidelines and practices for the effective use of CSS. Foreground color in CSS refers to the color of the text content of an element and its decorations, such as underline, over-line, line-through, and blink; so, foreground color is probably more aptly thought of as text color. Background color refers to the color of the box that represents an Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) element. The effect of color combinations and contrast on legibility is just one of the considerations when choosing colors. On the physiological level, it is the incompatibility between the way the eyes work and some color combinations that requires consideration.
