ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with putting technology as an enabler within various habitable places and housing considerations playing a big role in it. An intelligent place embodies a market for an intelligent built environment and real estate, including housing. The chapter discusses the issues and framework for providing healthcare at home and other services under the ‘digital housing’ concept. From digital, connected television sets and personal computing devices to smart meters and intelligent refrigerators, the functionalities of housing as an ‘economic good’ can be transformed. Innovation in digital technology and massive, widespread use by millions of residents has made the city operation more challenging and complex. There are several challenges that may exist for starting digital housing services. Internet penetration, poor broadband strength and affordability are key concerns. There are several considerations that are a key for successful implementation of smarter approaches to housing the urban residents and management of urban systems as identified by the literature.
