ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses three major cohorts of the demographic profiles having significant implications for the housing markets — migrants, young and elderly people. The most consistent and persistent socio-economic trend is migration. Housing issues are very much linked with all types of migration — with much implication for demand for housing. Housing is a very important consideration for migrants and all types of migration involve housing outcomes with complex issues and dynamics. The United Kingdom has experienced a significant amount of migration over the decades. The key policy concerns related to the housing market are: spatial distribution of migrants. The increase in immigration may lead to changes in the life-courses and education, labour market and housing outcomes and pathways of natives and non-natives. Changes observed in the outcomes and pathways are often associated with socio-economic factors, demographic factors, household composition and sociocultural factors as well as other unique location-specific factors.
