ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at the various art roles within a 2D game art team and the disciplines with which the art team collaborates in a game development pipeline. It examines the various positions within a typical art team and the disciplines they interact with on a day-to-day basis within a game development environment. The role of production artist can encompass a large variety of art skills and digital tools, including 2D. The art director is ultimately responsible for all the aspects of an art team, including maintaining a consistent style and managing personnel such as the associate, concept, and production artists. An art director must have a solid grasp on all aspects of the creation of the art, must have strong communication skills, and must understand the project's "brand" in regard to what is and isn't appropriate for the product.
