ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the fundamentals while also examining how they relate to web and mobile game development, including such topics as line quality, leveraging stereotypes, model sheets, and the translation of bitmap designs to final vector game assets. Common "character" examples include themes such as the outlaw cowboy, swashbuckling pirate, or film-noir femme fatale as these are instantly recognizable to an audience. Stereotypes are typically a specific iconography that is recognizable to a general audience. The character's chest-out stance, we can surmise he's confident and most likely in a leadership position of some kind. It's also important to note that a "character design" doesn't necessarily mean one drawing and can often consist of multiple drawings and paintings. Apply the fundamentals of character design and a working knowledge of vector tools to our final project character assets. Line quality is another powerful communicative tool, as variation in line quality heightens descriptive potential while also adding to overall visual interest.
