ABSTRACT

Dealing with agreements, contracts, and all the other legal paperwork can be enough to try anyone's patience and make them think twice about the line of work. Licensing is possible in the gaming world, although developers usually strive to own the original compositions in their projects outright. But a cost-conscious one might consider the option of licensing instead. In a nutshell, whomever owns the copyright to a piece of work, either music or a sound effect, owns the work in its entirety and is free to use and/or license the work for whatever and to whomever they choose. Licensing is when the owner of a copyrighted piece of work grants exclusive or nonexclusive use of the work for a negotiated fee. Smaller developers would be more likely to seek out licenses to use one's work in their game because it is more affordable for them.
