ABSTRACT

While counselling is a profession in and of itself, some of the skills used by therapists are applicable to anyone working with adolescents. In counselling, connection and relationship building is important. This is particularly true for adolescents, and the ability to listen, empathise and engage in dialogue is vital for professionals working with adolescent substance users. In this chapter, readers will be introduced to the Adolescent Community Reinforcement Approach (ACRA). This is an evidence-based counselling style, designed specifi cally for work with adolescent substance users.
