ABSTRACT
Starting with a few general classifications that guide the modelling of vibrating systems, this introductory chapter reviews some basic ideas. Among these, we find the phenomenon of beats, the decibel scale and the concepts of displacement, velocity and acceleration – the three main physical quantities that, in the equations of motion, are related to the applied forces through the system’s parameters of stiffness, damping and mass.
