ABSTRACT

Polar vessels sailing in the Arctic Passage generate waves, which may influence the motion of sea ice around the navigation area. In addition, in the marginal ice zone (MIZ), waves are one of the main reasons why sea ice is deformed and broken under the effect of wave-sea ice interaction (Shen, 2001; Vaughan and Squire, 2011). The sea ice obtains kinetic energy under the wave impact, so a large area of ice cover near the harbor may deform and break into pieces in the waves. These small floes move along with the waves, and collide with each other and possibly a passing ship or port facilities also. As a result, the polar vessels sailing in marginal ice zone (MIZ) may be subjected to external loads including wave load and ice load. Therefore, the study of wave and sea ice interaction is of significance for ship design and safety from the perspective of external loads.
