ABSTRACT
Military surgery operates within the framework of a staged or echeloned system of care. The role of the surgical team is not to merely operate on the individual patient, but to preserve the fighting force through good surgical care and decision-making such that individual servicemen and women can be restored to health as soon as possible. The deployed surgical team must understand their environment and contingencies.
