ABSTRACT

This chapter is a question and answer style article that contains past FRCA paper examples related to neurosurgery, neuroradiology and neurocritical care. It also guides trainees on the most effective manner in which to approach these questions. The chapter presents the case study of a 24-year-old male who has been admitted to the emergency department with 30% burns from a house fire, trainees are asked to assess. The discussion covers the following: what would lead trainee to suspect significant inhalational injury; which investigations would trainee use to assess the severity of the inhalational injury and what are the likely findings; the indications for early tracheal intubation to secure the airway; and how do burn injuries influence the use of suxamethonium.
