ABSTRACT

Healthy relationships based on love and mutual respect can be an immense source of joy and support. A doctor's partner may feel dissatisfied with the relationship as the doctor becomes more immersed in work. As the partnership deteriorates, the doctor may immerse him or herself further into work, which is counterproductive. Separation may not only mean loss of a partner, but loss of time with children and extended family, loss of the family home and neighbourhood, loss of friends and social life, and loss of hopes for the future. It is natural to grieve over these losses. It takes time to rebuild lives and social networks. For this reason, it is common to experience depression and it is important to seek support from family, friends and a general practitioner, maintain a healthy lifestyle, avoid drugs and alcohol, and try to continue normal routines and activities such as exercise and sport.
