ABSTRACT

This chapter contains a guideline for assessing the impact of hydrodynamics on the treatment process performance in Water and Wastewater Treatment Units (WWTU), both for existing and planned units. In each case, a reference setup and at least one alternative setup are considered, where the alternative setup is aimed at providing improved treatment process and/or hydrodynamic performance. The indirect method’s effectiveness can only be confirmed after any modifications to the WWTU under analysis are implemented and tested in terms of their effects on the treatment process efficiency. Models such as this are used herein for illustration purposes only, without necessarily implying their validity and effectiveness. The type of assessment covered herein is based on tracer passage curves, which can be obtained in field, laboratory and/or computational studies. The assessment team can advance by working in a multidisciplinary/transdisciplinary manner to enable consistent and rational decision making, as highlighted in the Preface.
