ABSTRACT

One of the key factors affecting reservoir sedimentation is the sediment yield that is generated by the reservoir drainage basin. Sediment yield varies widely both spatially and temporally and is affected by a multitude of factors, such as rainfall and soil characteristics, soil management, topography, nature of the drainage network, surface runoff, sediment features, channel hydraulics, vegetation, land use and land cover, construction, and human disturbance. Climate change is also seen as a potential factor. This chapter discusses the effect of these factors on reservoir sedimentation in relation to a number of reservoirs, especially the ones from India.
