ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the new approach for colliding loosely coupled domains of building information modelling (BIM) and urban land administration, which would lay the foundation for transforming current 2D-based land and property development practices into collaborative three-dimensional (3D) digital environments. BIM-enabled 3D digital urban land administration is underpinned by mapping the legal data elements onto the open Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) data model. The chapter describes different alternatives for extending the IFC standard and the reasons for choosing the most appropriate extension method and the major parts of the adopted extension method. It provides an explanation of the details for modeling each legal data element within the extended version of the IFC standard. The chapter presents the extension of the IFC standard that is based on those elements identified in the context of the Victorian jurisdiction. It concludes by providing general and jurisdiction independent guidelines for realizing a BIM-based approach for urban land administration.
