ABSTRACT

Chapter 6 discusses two issues by demonstrating the applications of fPDEs presented in Chapter 5: infiltration into soils and water exchange between large and small pores. A number of equations of infiltration in different forms have been presented in this chapter. These topics include equations for infiltration into both swelling and non-swelling soils, with or without immobile pores, on flat surfaces and on hillslopes; infiltration on planar slopes has been particularly detailed and other forms of slopes have been briefly discussed. The new equations of infiltration for planar hillslopes are specifically useful for models on overland flow (discussed in Chapter 8). Water exchange between large and small pores has also been analyzed with two types of boundary conditions, along with asymptotic solutions for large and small times.
