ABSTRACT

The global transportation industry is on the verge of undergoing an unprecedented transformation to a new mobility ecosystem. Sustainable traffic systems are an imperative component of sustainable development, particularly in cities, and to achieve a sustainable traffic system, the focus should be on both mobility and environment. Modern control systems, faster on-board processors, and wireless communications provide features that greatly improve vehicles performance. Longitudinal assistance system functions include adaptive cruise control (ACC) and forward collision warning/avoidance. A Cooperative ACC system has been developed by adding a wireless vehicle-vehicle communication system and new control logic to an existing commercially available ACC system. Travel Information Systems – Information systems for travelers are significantly evolving and provide travelers with information that will facilitate their decisions concerning route choice, departure time, trip delay or elimination, and mode of transportation.
