ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses heavily on the unique optical properties of metal nanoparticles and quantum dots. Concepts such as band theory, quantum confinement, and surface plasmon resonance are used to explain the light–matter interactions involving gold and silver nanoparticles particularly. Other nanomaterials described in the chapter include metal and semiconductor nanowires, and their associated properties. Common synthesis methods used to create these nanomaterials are discussed in this chapter along with examples of practical applications.
