ABSTRACT

During the review of human error detection in Chapter 2, it is noted that some concerns exist over the use of the term human error in contemporary systems thinking, as it can be misused at the micro-ergonomic level to blame individuals rather than signpost the opportunity to tackle deficiencies within the sociotechnical system that caused the error. Chapter 3 looks to authorise the use of the term throughout the book by considering literature on the subject. The term human error is argued to remain meaningful when conducting human factors and ergonomics research from a systems perspective and therefore does not need to be excluded from progressive safety research such as I-LED.
