ABSTRACT
The aim of this chapter is to generalize the analysis of the previous chapter in order to deal with
longitudinal standing waves. A standing wave is a disturbance in a physically continuous mechani-
cal system that is periodic in space as well as in time, but which does not propagate. A longitudinal
wave is one in which the direction of oscillation is parallel to the direction along which the phase of
the waves varies sinusoidally.
