The success of enterprise Geographic Information Systems (GIS) depends upon clear, concise communications between staff, departments, and clients. Enterprise GIS can become a true enterprise system through the incorporation of ideas, tools, and methods from field of enterprise architecture. Goals are a vital piece of the foundation of the enterprise GIS. Proper planning and organization will produce an enterprise GIS that is adaptable, responsive, and efficient. GIS professionals jumped right in and began applying GIS capabilities to the vast pool of big data. GIS-based online has stirred the public health interest in forming regional planning and response groups. A regional public health planning group supported by enterprise GIS could save a lot of lives. Hospitals are experimenting with GIS to map the brain, analyze patient information, and keep track of patient locations within their buildings. Urban and Regional Information Systems Association created the GISCorps to provide short-term GIS services to underprivileged communities.
