ABSTRACT

This chapter demonstrates how enterprise Geographic Information Systems (GIS) developers, designers, and programmers can bridge the gap between themselves and enterprise architecture. The goal of an enterprise GIS is to provide the capabilities and tools of GIS to everyone in the organization. A foundation stone for both enterprise architecture and GIS is the creating of a central warehouse of data and information. The GIS will use a geodatabase for the data warehouse. Catalogs are also excellent tools for budgetary planning. Data catalogs are another tool that GIS can “steal” from the data architect’s toolbox. The data catalog will keep data organized and aid in identifying potential issues with incorporating legacy data into the enterprise system format. A properly constructed application catalog will provide many benefits to someone fulfilling the responsibilities of the application architect. Google sheets, MS Excel, or any spreadsheet program can be used to create a technology catalog.
