ABSTRACT

This chapter shows how various models can be used to create a visual representation of the enterprise Geographic Information Systems (GIS). This visual representation or model of the GIS provides enterprise architects, developers, programmers, and users a standard tool for visualizing and planning system connectivity between data, storage, applications, and hardware. Sub-architectures are used to visualize individual subsystems of the architecture. The sub-architectures enable users to “zoom in” to a specific piece of strategic architecture. The current state to future state models is an excellent example of building a strategic architecture from the subsystems. A geodatabase sub-architecture displays the internal storage of the file geodatabase. Overview drawings can be used to educate people about the inner workings of the enterprise information system. The lines, arrows, and constructions display the paths, travel directions, origins, and final destinations of data within the system.
