ABSTRACT

This chapter provides analysts with a concise survey of data backed by literature references and, thus, to spare them a lot of time for data searching, since some of the cited papers are not generally available. It presents a guide for the detection of various inorganic species. Chemical reactions used in resin spot tests may involve both charged (ionic) and neutral (molecular or atomic) species. Various inorganic and organic reagents react with inorganic analyte; very often the nature of the relationship between the structure of a reagent and its reaction with analyte is known. Certain inorganic reagents are used to observe and to distinguish between the different kinds of crystals formed. At the same time certain others, especially potassium or ammonium thiocyanate, are extremely useful in providing additional test(s) for various inorganic analytes. Carbon atoms may constitute either the less reactive part of a molecule to which the functional group is attached, or the active functional group itself.
