Innature,Brucellasuisbiovar2hasaveryspecificpathogenicityforpigsandhares. Inguineapigs,itcausedmacroscopicandmicroscopiclesionssimilartothoseproducedby otherbrucellae.10GuineapiginfectionsproducedbystrainsofB.suisisolatedfromreindeer werequitesimilartothoseinfectionsproducedbyotherbiovarsofB.suis. 12
Allbrucellae,withexceptionssuchasB.ovis,werepathogenicforguineapigs.Lesions wereconsistentlyrecordedintheliver,spleen,lungsandlymphnodesafewhoursafter subcutaneousinoculation.Theorganismcouldbeisolatedfromblood,lymphnodesand internalorgans.8 •9Initially,lesionswereobservedinlymphnodesatthesiteofinoculation; later,hepaticgranulomasandsplenomegalywerefound.Thegranuloma,asreportedby Fabyanin1912,isthebasichistologiclesioninguineapigs,andthesametypeoflesion hasbeenreportedinhumans,mice,rats,rabbits,dogs,andmonkeys. 8
Animportantpropertyofbrucellaisitsabilitytosurviveandevenreplicatewithin phagocyticcells.Mostofthebrucellaeinjectedintravenouslywereremovedbytheliver andspleenandconcentratedinthoseorgans.Chronicinfectionswereestablishedinspite ofreticuloendothelialactivity.11
