ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with the design of the lunar module ascent and descent stages, life on the surface, the activities of the astronauts, their spacesuits and the lunar rover. Free of the need to survive entry into an atmosphere, the design of the lunar module could evolve in a way dictated by expediency and the single-minded purposes of landing and providing a habitat on the Moon. One key issue that was identified early in the development of the lunar module was visibility for the astronauts while landing on the Moon. It was always thought that the lunar module would essentially be a skin wrapped round the tanks and equipment needed. Once the lunar module had separated from the command and service module combination it flew in front so that the command module pilot could make a visual check of the spacecraft. The most memorable view relayed to Earth, however, was the launch of the lunar module ascent stage.
