ABSTRACT

The laser industry is interested in the definite expansion of the construction industry because of the rising importance of laser construction, alignment, and ranging in this field. Lasers may be used for surface inspection and nondestructive testing of materials for construction. Perhaps the history of this interesting application of the laser began in 1965 when a laser of Spectra Physics was used in the San Francisco Bay area for construction of a rapid transit system. In pipe laying the laser can be used directly in the pipe or to show the direction for pipe laying. The laser should be treated as a very valuable instrument to be handled with care and to be used with knowledge and understanding. The laser theodolite is the surveying instrument for measuring horizontal and vertical angles. The theodolite instrument may be combined with the transit line.
