ABSTRACT

Historically, traditional medicine has dealt with injuries only after the fact. An individual had to be sick or injured before he would seek medical assistance; the medical establishment never gave any thought to anyone but a sick or injured individual. By placing all the emphasis on rehabilitation and no emphasis on prevention, the medical establishment and industrial leadership have made it difficult to contain costs. According to leading back specialist, author, lecturer and researcher, Dr. Malcolm I. V. Jayson of Bristol, England, "low back pain is among the most common of human disabilities. Indeed, at some time in our lives most of us suffer from at least minor spinal symptoms. Any health care practitioner who believes he knows what a person does on the job is deceiving himself. He cannot understand unless he personally visits the job site and studies the job and the work environment.
