Three-hour training programs teaching prevention of back injuries were conducted as part of a 1983 annual retraining. Class size varied between 10 to 35 participants on all shifts and over 1500 employees were trained from January until October. In January 1988, the company intensified their training program and implemented a ten-minute stretch and flex program. Training centers were installed at mine sites. This report on LTA's due to back pain gives us wonderful insight into the nature of ongoing training and its effects. By 1984, Clinchfield Coal was concerned that back injuries were getting out of control and decided they must do something about it.
