ABSTRACT

Walters proposed combining single-component-RNA beetle-transmitted viruses into a "southern bean mosaic virus group". Hull proposed including several viruses in the group on the basis of similarities in physicochemical properties. Hull's proposal was accepted by the ICTV, who changed the name of the group to the sobemovirus group. Sobemovirus-induced inclusions are diagnostic for infections at the group level. Properties of sobemoviruses have been reviewed by Sehgal, Francki and co-workers, and Hull. Three sobemoviruses have been found in naturally infected legumes: lucerne transient streak, southern bean mosaic, and subterranean clover mottle. SCMoV has not been classified by the ICTV, but it has been assigned to the sobemovirus group by Francki and co-workers and Hull.
